Hello Finsa,

my name is Envisions.

Born from the idea that experimentation is the key to innovation, Dutch collective Envisions approached Finsa, the Spanish wood manufacturer. After its debut in Milan last year, Envisions returns with yet another premier: an experimental collaboration between designer and industry where the emphasis is not on the finished product but on the possibilities uncovered along the way.

Envisions considers the process to be one of design's defining factors, one which is often undervalued and rarely - if ever - exposed through out the industry. Functioning as a conceptual breeding ground, the preliminary phases of a product's formation present limitless possibilities and deserve the spotlight in their own right. Corporate companies often stick to the road of proven practices and clearly defined objectives, missing the possibly fruitful alternatives discovered while taking the path les travelled. But not Finsa.

The Spanish manufacturer swung open its factory doors to Envisions. All twelve members were invited to infiltrate Finsa's production grounds and set free their individualised creativity.

Continuing its original mission as an industry-inspiring laboratory, envisions set out to uncover new applications and uses for Finsa's complete range of materials, which include chipboard, medium density fibreboard (MDF), veneer, melamine and even before step product as printed paper. By tinkering with by-products and sheet materials as well as the manufacturer's established techniques, the designers crafted twelve distinctive processes - assorted in both character and end use- which showcase the pioneering potential of the unhindered imaginations of industry outsiders.

For Dutch duo VANTOT, it’s all in the name. Literally translated from Dutch to mean ‘from to’, VANTOT focuses on the entire process, starting with a technique and ending with the product. The pair strives to find new applications for innovations in everyday life, and it’s not only new-found technologies which have seized their interest. Serving as a guiding light in the duo’s work, antiquated techniques are put to good use in modern day outlets, mutually benefiting from today’s updated knowledge base. Take electricity. Although light bulbs have been around for centuries, innovations – such as the rise of the LEDs –  have made continuous evolution possible. And today, electronic devices operate on much lower voltages than ever before, significantly decreasing its hazardous aspects. While direct contact with electricity – and light – used to be a no go, recent developments illuminate completely new realms for the old technology. By embedding electronic paths into a multitude of surfaces, VANTOT redesigns the relationship between humans and electricity, especially in home environments.

Envisions is a Dutch collective that showcases everything but the end product. The collection of work aims to offer new insights to different phases that would normally never be seen by the public’s eye. By revealing the steps of the extensive research process that precedes a design’s final outcome, the collection breathes life into initial concepts and pushes them towards reality.  Transcending the fear of copycats, the exhibitors reveal more about their work – and themselves – to the public. By doing so, a climate for interaction and exchange is created. The setup is intended to trigger a dialogue between designers, clients and manufacturers, who are encouraged to approach each project as a collaborator. By crowdsourcing ideas, Envisions allows for unexpected developments in the making process and ultimately gives rise to new-found joint ventures.
